About

Any Major Dude Will Tell You…

Any major dude with half a heart surely will tell you my friend

Any minor world that breaks apart falls together again

When the demon is at your door

In the morning it won’t be there no more

Any major dude will tell you

– Steely Dan

This blog is for all the dudes out there who have found (or are finding) themselves at a crossroads somewhere in that gray area we call “midlife.”  It may be the loss of a job that thrusts you into the position of considering a complete career change, or a divorce that occurred at a time or manner not of your choosing.  Or, perhaps you finally had to face your mortality when your doctor told you that the time has come to dramatically alter your lifestyle in order to ward off an untimely  dirt nap.  Whatever it is, the most important thing to remember is that you are hardly alone out therewe all come to this crossroads sooner or later.  As you look back on your life and everything that has brought you to where you are today, the only relevant question becomes not what you would have, should have, or could have done, but what will you do now, looking forward?  Take heart – because if you properly apply the wisdom from all those lessons learned, your best years may very well be ahead of you.

“You are never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream.”
– (C.S. Lewis didn’t really say this, but it’s still a good quote to be inspired by..)

You had me at the Steely Dan quote. I guess it dates me. Any thoughts on mid-life women listening in on your insights?

I’m in my 50’s and recently lost my job. My Mom died two weeks later. So even though I’m a woman, I can relate to much of your work. Will follow!

Thank you, Susan. I am so sorry for your two big losses. I hope you can soon replace the one that is replaceable, and remember always this quote as you grieve the loss of your mother:

“What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love becomes a part of us.” – Helen Keller

I keep that one close at all times – as we get older, we experience more and more the loss of people we know and love. Write about her, and honor her. The best example of this that I can think of is A Twist of Lemmon: A Tribute to My Father, written by Chris Lemmon to memorialize his father, Jack.

      A big hug to you,
      – G

I wonder if you notice I’m the 3rd women to comment! How right you are – maybe – about men. However — as for me, I’m well beyond mid-life, so far over that hill, I’ve got all the teeshirts there ever were. So many I’ve given up wearing them. And the good news is; Life only get better and better, lighter of heart, younger and younger, if you keep on living as a creator. So keep writing, dude.

There are no palliatives for the mid-life crisis, but here are a few quotes: ‘Mid-life is the moment of greatest unfolding.’ C.G Jung. ‘Men are like wine; some turn to vinegar but the best improve with age.’ Pope John XX111. ‘The unexamined life is not worth living.’ Socrates. ‘Breakdown – since I know nothing at all, I shall simply do whatever occurs to me.’ C G Jung.
From Michael, my husband, age 65.
